1. Four Reasons to Travel to Vietnam in September

If you are still undecided about going to Vietnam in September, allow us to present four excellent reasons that will dispel your doubts and help you make an informed decision:

  • Budget friendly: In September, considered the low tourist season in Vietnam, the prices of plane tickets, hotels, and services are more affordable, allowing you to experience a wonderful trip at the best price.
  • Quality Service: Hotels and cruise ships are not crowded in September, which guarantees optimal quality of service and increased attention to your well-being.
  • Fewer crowds: September marks the end of school holidays for Vietnamese students and their families. Thus, the must-see tourist destinations are less crowded, giving you the opportunity to peacefully enjoy the magnificent landscapes and explore Vietnam in all its authenticity.
  • Cultural Festivities: The month of September is also famous for its festivities in Vietnam, including National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival, which take place in many villages and towns. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the Asian atmosphere, admire the colorful lanterns, and taste the famous mooncakes.

2. What is the Weather Like in Vietnam in September?

Vietnam, shaped like a long, narrow S, resembles a dragon, with mountain ranges, passes, and coastlines, creating distinct weather patterns in the North, Central, and South regions of the country.

2.1 Weather in Northern Vietnam in September

  • Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa, Lao Cai, Cao Bang, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Hoang Su Phi, Mai Chau, Moc Chau, Pu Luong, etc.

Early September is a fantastic time to visit the North, especially the mountains, as it marks the transition from summer to autumn, resulting in lower temperatures. The region experiences an average temperature of 26°C, ranging from 25 to 32°C in the Red River Delta, and from 17 to 27°C in the mountains.

This period is also when the rice planted in June begins to mature, creating spectacular landscapes of golden rice terraces stretching as far as the eye can see. By mid to late September, ethnic minorities start harvesting the rice, and the terraces gradually empty.

2.2 Weather in Central Vietnam in September

  • Quang Binh, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, etc.

When the monsoon winds come from the north, they reach the central region and cause frequent rainfall. The region experiences an average temperature of 26°C, ranging from 24 to 32°C.

Storms and floods can occur, so it is advisable to choose another month if you plan to go hiking in Quang Binh or other places in Central Vietnam. However, if you want to visit Hue and Hoi An, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, you can explore them despite the weather conditions.

2.3 Weather in Southern Vietnam in September

  • Nha Trang, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet, Ho Chi Minh City, Con Dao Island, Phu Quoc Island, Mekong Delta provinces like My Tho, Ben Tre, Can Tho, An Giang,…

The weather in the South is almost similar to that in the North. The monsoon recedes and usually warm, short showers occur in the late afternoon or evening. Temperatures generally remain between 23 and 32°C.

It is also the start of the flood season, when the waters of the upstream Mekong and Tonle Sap Lake flow down towards the Mekong Delta. The rice fields then transform into vast ponds filled with fish and shrimp, thanks to the fertilizing alluvium from the Mekong.

I think about go to Hanoi and reserve a good hotel until Monday. I’m currently in Sa Pa but I presume that there is a possibility that roads could be closed for days or weeks. What do you think about it ?

After the recent Typhoon Yagi, it’s probably best to hold off on your trip to Hanoi for now. Roads might be closed for a while as repairs are underway, and safety is the top priority. Keep an eye on the latest updates, and you can plan your visit once things settle down.

Stay safe!
